Emmerdale and Happy Valley actor Frazer Hammill was found dead at his home in Doncaster on December 30, 2025, just hours after being questioned by police, an inquest has confirmed. The 41-year-old star died by suicide, having taken his own life following his arrest and release from custody the previous day.

According to testimony presented at the inquest, Hammill had been arrested by Lancashire Police and, after being questioned, appeared to be in good spirits when he left the station. Officers reportedly had no concerns about his safety or mental wellbeing at the time of his release.

He was found deceased at his residence shortly after 2:00 PM on December 30, with emergency services unable to resuscitate him. His time of death was officially recorded as 2:13 PM.

The coroner, Louise Slater, determined that Hammill’s death resulted from hanging and concluded it was a deliberate act. She stated that he had left a note for a neighbour instructing them not to enter the property but to call the police, as he had taken his own life. Additional notes were also found for his friends, and family.

In her summary, the coroner said: “I am satisfied that this was a deliberate act and Frazer had put thought, planning and intention into his actions.” She confirmed that Hammill passed away at his home on December 30, noting he was a single man, an actor, and very close to his family members.

His sister, Caroline Hammill, delivered a statement to the court in which she described his death as a “complete shock” to the family. She said none of them had been aware that he was feeling low enough to take his own life and that he had appeared happy in the days leading up to his death.

Hammill was known for his roles in two major British television dramas. He appeared in the long-running ITV soap opera Emmerdale and had a significant part in the acclaimed BBC series Happy Valley, where his performance garnered attention from audiences and critics alike.

The announcement of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans. Co-stars from both productions expressed their sorrow, with many highlighting his kindness and professionalism on set. Fans flooded social media with messages of support for his family and shared memories of his work.

Following his passing, both Emmerdale and Happy Valley acknowledged the loss. While no official statements were issued regarding potential storylines or tributes within the shows, internal sources confirmed that cast and crew were deeply affected by the news.

The inquest heard that Hammill had left clear instructions for those who might discover him, underscoring the premeditated nature of his actions as determined by the coroner. Despite his outward demeanor upon release from police custody, the investigation concluded that he had intended to end his life.

As of the conclusion of the inquest, no further details have been released regarding any ongoing investigations or potential contributions from mental health professionals involved in his care. The focus remains on remembering his contributions to British television and supporting those closest to him.
