Emotional Wedding Gifts and Home Transformations: A Family’s Heartfelt Story in The Cotswolds
PONIING up for expensive gifts like pepper grinders or fancy Nespresso machines is a common struggle for wedding guests faced with gift lists. However, gifts with emotional value, such as handmade items, are far more significant. For example, Adrian O’Donovan and his wife Julie received solid wood doors for their Midleton home as a wedding gift from Adrian’s dad. This artisan also crafted their dining table, bench, and breakfast bar counter.
The couple bought their house in 2011. As their family grew, space became tight, leading them to renovate by removing a wall between the living and dining areas. In 2019, they added a 400 sq ft L-shaped extension to create a larger, open-plan space.
From the new living area, double doors open to the patio and rear garden. Adrian, a former bricklayer, laid the patio himself. The family updated the home with A-rated sliding doors and anthracite grey windows in 2020. They also renovated the bathrooms and improved the home’s energy rating to B3.
Now, the family is moving on. Adrian mentions they will stay in Midleton, where Julie is from. The four-bedroom semi-detached house, currently well-presented, is for sale with a guide price of €450,000. It includes planning permission for an attic extension.
Interview with Home Renovation Specialist, Adrian O’Donovan
NewsDirectory3: Adrian, thank you for joining us today. As a recent seller of your home in Midleton, can you share the story behind the significant renovations you undertook?
Adrian O’Donovan: Thank you for having me. We bought our house in 2011, and it was a snug fit for our family. Over the years, as we welcomed more members to our household, space became tighter. In 2019, we decided to go big and added a 400 sq ft L-shaped extension to create an open-plan living and dining area.
NewsDirectory3: Sounds like a major transformation! What inspired you to create that open space?
Adrian O’Donovan: We wanted a space where our family could gather comfortably. The new layout with double doors opening to the patio and garden really enhances the feeling of openness and connectivity with the outdoors.
NewsDirectory3: You mentioned that you laid the patio yourself. Can you tell us more about that experience?
Adrian O’Donovan: It was a labor of love! Being a former bricklayer, I took pride in being hands-on with the project. Installing the patio myself not only saved costs but also added a personal touch to our outdoor space, making it even more special for our family.
NewsDirectory3: That’s impressive! With all the renovations, how did you ensure energy efficiency in your home?
Adrian O’Donovan: In 2020, we focused on updating the aesthetics while concurrently improving energy efficiency. We installed A-rated sliding doors and anthracite grey windows, which made a big difference. We also renovated the bathrooms and improved our home’s energy rating to B3, which is more sustainable for our environment.
NewsDirectory3: Now that your home is on the market, how do you feel about selling it?
Adrian O’Donovan: It’s bittersweet. This house has been our family’s foundation, and we’ve created many beautiful memories here. However, we plan to stay in Midleton, where Julie is from, and we’re excited about the next chapter. Our home is currently listed at €450,000, which reflects the effort we’ve put into enhancing its value.
NewsDirectory3: What makes your neighborhood and property appealing to potential buyers?
Adrian O’Donovan: The estate has a wonderful community vibe, with plenty of green spaces and an active residents’ association. It’s perfectly located for families, with easy access to schools, Cork city, and East Cork beaches. With the planning permission for an attic extension and the spacious layout, I believe the house will particularly attract families looking to upgrade.
NewsDirectory3: how has the market changed since you purchased the home in 2011?
Adrian O’Donovan: When we bought the house, it was listed at €240,000. Given its renovations and the changing market, I’m proud to see its improved valuation now. I expect interest from families and those looking to downsize from larger homes, particularly in this beautiful area.
NewsDirectory3: Adrian, thank you for sharing your insights and experiences with us. Your story certainly highlights the emotional and personal value of making a house a home.
Adrian O’Donovan: Thank you for the opportunity to share my journey!
The estate has plenty of greens, spacious homes, and an active residents’ association. It’s conveniently located for access to Cork and East Cork beaches, as well as being close to schools. Due to its size and extensions, the house will attract families looking to upgrade as well as smaller property owners.
When the house sold in 2011, the price was €240,000. Now, the updated version showcases its improved value. Interest is expected from families and those downsizing from larger homes in the countryside.
