Graduate School Guide: Sustainability Science Education Program
Overview of the Program
The Sustainability Science Education Program is an interdisciplinary program that aims to cultivate leaders who can address the complex sustainability challenges facing modern society. In addition to the core courses, students can select and take this program to gain a comprehensive understanding of sustainability science.
Program Objectives
The program focuses on solving environmental problems, energy and resource shortages, water and food shortages, population problems, and other sustainability challenges. Through foundational subjects and on-site exercises both domestically and overseas, students can gain a comprehensive perspective on these issues and develop knowledge in specialized fields.
Program Requirements
To complete the program, students must earn:
- 2 credits in the common core subject “Frontier of Sustainability Science”
- 4 credits or more from overview subjects
- 1 credit or more from specialized subjects
- A total of 10 credits or more
Students who meet the required completion requirements will receive a master’s degree for the course, as well as a “Certificate of Completion of Ibaraki University Graduate School Education Program in Sustainability Science” and a “Certificate of Completion of SSC Joint Education Program”.
About SSC (Sustainability Science Consortium)

SSC is an organization that engages in a wide range of activities to cultivate new talent through education based on the perspective of sustainability science, and promote and support the development of awareness and practical activities among companies, governments, and the general public. The required course “The Frontline of Sustainability Science” is jointly offered by SSC member universities, including the University of Tokyo, Osaka University, United Nations University, and Ibaraki University.
