Intergenerational Meetings of Benin Women Political Leaders Open in Nikki
The 2nd edition of the intergenerational meetings of Benin women political leaders opened on Thursday, September 19, 2024, in Nikki, with over 500 women from different political parties participating.
These meetings are part of the activities to mark the Gaani’s celebration of Gnon Kogui, the vice-queen of Nikki’s empire. The initiative is led by the Vice President of Benin, Mariam Chabi Talata Zimé Yérima.
Female Political Leadership in Benin: Strategies for Greater Efficiency and Visibility
The reflections focus on the theme: “Female political leadership in Benin: what strategies for greater efficiency and visibility of women in public responsibility.” The discussions will lead to proposals and recommendations.
“Eating the Past”
The Vice President of the Republic, Mariam Chabi Talata, emphasizes that the meetings are intended to be informative and not confrontational. She says:
“It will not be about women opposing men, confronting them and challenging them on different levels. We come to Nikki to remind, once again, in accordance with our centuries-old traditions, where we decide everyone’s lives, that space must be consensually reserved for women to carry their voice for good everyone”.
The Vice President hopes that the new generation of women will be inspired by the socio-political leadership of Gnon Kogui, who plays a leading role in the Barutem empire.
Gnon Kogui: An Inspiring Model
Mariam Chabi Talata demands:
“For five centuries, the various emperors who have succeeded each other to the throne of Nikki have ruled with women by their side, playing important roles.”
Said the key to Mary, “make gender-sensitive governance visible, and Gnon kogui is the incarnation, [c’est] call on the past that today is an expression to build the present and the future better”.
Opportunities to Take Advantage of
Huguettes Bokpè Gnacadja, president of the National Institute for Women (INF), sees opportunities to take advantage of:
“[Les rencontres intergénérationnelles] We are [rapprochent] more of the Gnon Kogui to unite a beautiful example of yesterday that has stood the test of time with innovation and today’s context. We believe that it is possible, for young female leaders, (…) to create a modern vision of female political leadership, and other areas as well, which borrows from the inspiring elements of tradition, while meeting all current needs”.

This edition of the intergenerational meetings recorded the participation of women from other countries, notably Guinea, Senegal, Mali, and Ivory Coast.
The Vice President of the Republic was right in carrying out the initiative according to Djibril Mama Cissé, Borgou official. “The question of women’s participation in socio-political life is a subject of debate within national and international communities, especially organizations responsible for the protection and defense of human rights”denotes the prefect of Borgou.
These meetings mark the next day’s Gaani y Gnon Kogui Emperor Nikki’s celebration. They extend from September 19 to 21, 2024.
