World Suicide Prevention Day: Training for Officials to Reduce Suicide Risk
In commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Seremi de Salud O’Higgins conducted a training workshop for over a hundred officials from organizations that are part of the Regional Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Table at the UOH Rancagua headquarters.
The workshop, focused on community facilitators, aimed to equip participants with preventive capacities to reduce the risk of suicide. The training provided knowledge, competences, skills, and tools to prevent, detect, and address suicidal behaviors in a timely manner.
Minister of Health, Dr. Carolina Torres, emphasized the importance of inter-sectoral work and producing skills that translate into well-being for communities. “We are training the network related to the suicide prevention table and mental health in the region. We recognize that these issues are gaps in our society, and these cases are a means of building groups and inviting discussions about the issue,” Dr. Torres stated.
Epidemiologist Oscar Aguirre from the Seremi de Salud O’Higgins presented an in-depth analysis of the issue, highlighting key figures and data. Soledad Valderrama, in charge of Mental Health at the Seremi de Salud, discussed risk factors and protectors, as well as identifying and addressing suicidal behavior.
In addition to this initiative, the Health Authority promotes the *4141 telephone number, a free hotline with specialists available to assist in emergency or mental health crisis situations related to suicide.
