Empowering Indonesia’s Future: Unveiling the Groundbreaking Hanuri Training Center
“Education creates the future.”
This is the slogan of the Yayasan Hanuri Edukasi Center (hereinafter referred to as Hanuri Education Center), a non-profit organization located in the Cikarang area, the largest industrial complex near Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.
Hanuri Education Center is a new type of social contribution program that is the first of its kind in Indonesia. As a non-profit vocational training center for children from low-income families, all costs, including building infrastructure for the training center, operating the training center, paying instructors, and paying the living expenses of trainees, are covered by donations.
August 2023, National Southern Chikarang Vocational High School Information SessionHanuri Education Center, which was established 18 years ago by Mr. Lee Su-han, who moved to Indonesia and settled down, completed registration as a corporation with 5 Indonesian founders in July of last year with a founding donation of 1 billion rupiah in accordance with the Indonesian corporation establishment regulations. Koreans living in Indonesia, Korean companies, and Korean organizations are walking shoulder to shoulder, step by step, with the motto, “People who walk together, let’s walk together!”
The Cikarang area, where Hanuri Education Center is located, is an industrial complex with large factories and partner companies in the global automobile, motorcycle, and electronics industries, and requires a large number of workers with various skills. However, the level of education in Indonesian regular schools is not up to the level that companies can hire due to a lack of government funding, so companies have to train employees for a considerable period of time after hiring them.
Smart Factoring ProcessHanuri Education Center aims to provide free education to children from poor families who cannot advance to higher education, and to create new opportunities for them to escape poverty by obtaining stable jobs. Hanuri Education Center also provides technical training for the skills required by companies to trainees, so that they can acquire the minimum theoretical and practical skills as new employees.
After registering as a corporate body, Hanuri Education Center conducted a market survey on the functions related to hiring new employees at companies in the Jjigarang area, selected the necessary vocational training courses, and created a curriculum with instructors with field experience.
Administrative Practice CourseIn parallel, we visited national high schools (general and vocational) in the Chikarang area and held information sessions for teachers and students, and selected trainees through document screening and interviews of prospective graduates recommended by the schools.
The vocational training conducted at Hanuri Education Center consists of three courses: △3D Design: 3D design, 2D design, and MS OFFICE document work required by mold-injection-processing companies, etc. △Smart Factoring: PLC (Mitsubishi, Siemens) training and 2D design required for maintenance of automated equipment in medium and large-sized factories △Administrative Practice: Korean language training and accounting-tax-accounting training, etc.
3D DESIGN COURSETrainees come to the center for eight hours a day, Monday through Friday, for six months, and receive theoretical and practical training from expert instructors for each course. In addition, field workers for each course share their field experiences through volunteer work.
In preparation for the second half of 2023, 30 trainees (10 each for 3 courses) were selected from January 15th of this year and completed the 6-month course in July, and 29 of them were employed. Currently, 30 trainees in the 2nd batch are receiving 6-month training from July until the end of the year.
Lee Su-han, the CEO who established the Hanuri Education Center, said, “I didn’t think it would be smooth sailing from the beginning. Let’s start by deciding on the curriculum, recruiting instructors, creating a curriculum together, purchasing and setting up the necessary educational materials (one computer per person, SW, demo kits, etc.), hiring local operators, and preparing infrastructure costs to share and prepare the role of the education center, as well as operating funds to graduate at least one group of trainees. If we take these steps one by one, we will find companions who want to walk this path with us. And that belief is now becoming a reality.”
Last July, the Indonesia Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry decided to donate money every year and took a commemorative photo.Initially, it started with a few individual sponsors, but companies came forward to offer small donations, and the path of ‘accompanying’ gradually expanded as Hankook Tire Indonesia (CEO Jang Du-young) promised to sponsor rent as a CSR activity fund and hire new employees from among the trainees.
Initial skepticism was resolved once the trainees were selected and classes began, and sponsorship from local Korean associations, self-employed individuals, corporations, and the Korindo Foundation increased by 1-2 accounts per month, and as of September, about 50 corporate and individual sponsorship accounts have been opened. In addition, the Korean Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (Chairman Lee Kang-hyun, KOCHAM) visited the Hanuri Training Center on July 24 and delivered 50 million rupiah in support money. Chairman Lee Kang-hyun said, “The Hanuri Training Center is playing an important role in fostering talents with the skills needed in the field,” and “KOCHAM will continue to provide active support to contribute to the development of local businesses and the economy and to create new social values.”

On the right in the front row is CEO Lee Soo-han.Some companies that hired the first batch of Hanuri Education Center trainees are also on the sponsorship list. Hanuri Education Center matches trainees with companies in need of new employees and supports the interview process, but does not get involved in the hiring contract process. It is also a pure volunteer model that does not request fees related to employment or hiring from trainees or companies. Hanuri Education Center encourages companies that sympathize with this purpose and have the means to participate in sponsorship. Likewise, trainees are encouraged to aim for a sincere job after employment and, if possible, to donate even a small amount as a way to return the help they received to their juniors.
CEO Lee Soo-han said, “There are companies that want the first batch of trainees that ended in early July in Bogor, Tangerang, Purokarta, and Surabaya, in addition to Cikarang, where the training center is located. I hope that vocational training centers like the Cikarang Training Center will be established and operated in other regions where Korean companies are located.” He added, “I ask for your interest and support so that we can provide technical training to Indonesian high school graduates from poor environments and create a virtuous cycle where they can get jobs at Korean companies.”
