Empowering Stories: Two Lung Cancer Patients’ Perseverance and Strength During Awareness Month
Understanding Lung Cancer: Types, Diagnosis, and Support
Desiree and Vickie both faced life-changing diagnoses. Desiree has non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), while Vickie has small cell lung cancer (SCLC).
Lung cancer is the second most common cancer globally. The two main types, NSCLC and SCLC, require different treatment strategies. Early diagnosis is essential to create an effective treatment plan.
Biomarker Testing and Treatment
Desiree’s diagnosis was stage IV NSCLC. She began an aggressive treatment plan. To guide her treatment, she underwent biomarker testing. This testing revealed the KRAS G12C mutation in her tumor. This mutation is found in about 13% of NSCLC patients in Western countries. Understanding her tumor’s makeup allowed Desiree to start a targeted treatment plan.
Desiree encourages others to inquire about their biomarker status. She believes in exploring all available options and not giving up.
Support for Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients
Vickie’s journey with SCLC started after she experienced severe chest pains. She received radiation and chemotherapy. After a year, her cancer spread to her brain, marking the start of extensive-stage SCLC. This form of lung cancer is highly aggressive, with a five-year survival rate of only 7%.
Throughout her treatment, Vickie stayed active and leaned on her community and family for support. She emphasizes embracing the journey and finding joy in everyday moments.
