Challenges Faced by Suwon Girls’ High School Basketball Team Amid Low Birth Rate
The 2024 Suwon Girls’ High School basketball team is struggling to cope with a severe shortage of players. With a total of 9 players, the team is woefully inadequate, considering only 5 players can be on the court at a time. Excluding the 3 players who are unable to play for a year due to transfer disciplinary action, the team has to play a 40-minute game with 6 players.
In March and April, the team did not participate in the Spring National Men’s and Women’s Middle and High School Basketball Federation Tournament and the Association President’s Cup National Men’s and Women’s Middle and High School Basketball Tournament due to injuries. In the May President’s Cup, they barely managed to get together a team of six, but that was it. In the two competitions held in June and August, the five starting players played for 40 minutes without any substitutes.
A Suwon Girls’ High School official noted that the team’s situation is slightly better than last year when only five players participated in all competitions. However, the reality remains that the team is struggling to fill the entry list due to a lack of players. An official from Suwon Girls’ High School stated, “It does not make sense for five people to play for 40 minutes. However, that is the reality.”
The low birth rate has had a significant impact on the team’s situation. In an era where people are having fewer children, it is not an easy decision to raise one child as an athlete. This has resulted in a decrease in the overall player pool, leading to a decline in competitiveness. A basketball official noted, “There are many players who play basketball for the sole purpose of going to college.”
The situation is not unique to Suwon Girls’ High School. Other teams, such as Dong-A High School and Gunsan High School in the boys’ high school division, and Sangju Girls’ High School in the girls’ high school division, have also failed to qualify due to a lack of players. Sungeui Girls’ Middle School in the girls’ middle school division also failed to qualify due to a lack of players.
The challenges faced by Suwon Girls’ High School basketball team highlight the need for support and resources to help teams cope with the impact of the low birth rate. It is essential to address the decline in competitiveness and ensure that players have the opportunity to develop their skills and participate in proper games during their high school years.
