Uber Driver Critically Injured in Encanto Crash; Passenger Hurt

An Uber driver is in critical condition following a single-vehicle accident in the Encanto area of san Diego on Thursday afternoon. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) reported the incident occurred near the intersection of 60th Street and Imperial Avenue just before 4 p.m.
According to San Diego police, the 67-year-old driver was traveling east on Imperial Avenue when he veered left, mounted the curb, and collided with a power box and a bus bench. The black Kia he was driving ended up on its side near trolley tracks. A witness suggested to police that the Uber driver may have lost consciousness or fallen asleep at the wheel before the crash.
A female passenger was able to exit the vehicle on her own and sustained minor injuries. Emergency responders extricated the driver from the wreckage. He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this crash, and we’re keeping those injured in our thoughts as they recover,” said an Uber spokesperson. “We’ve reached out to both the rider and the driver to check on their wellbeing, and we stand ready to support law enforcement in their investigation.”
The crash also caused a temporary shutdown of trolley service in both directions, according to the SDFD. Authorities are investigating the cause of the Encanto crash.
