Today, we’re launching Encrypt it Already, a campaign demanding companies offer stronger privacy protections through end-too-end encryption. this builds on our 2019 Fix It Already campaign, which focused on fixing existing issues.
End-to-end encryption is the strongest way to protect your conversations and data. it means the company providing a service can’t access what you store on it. For secure chat apps like whatsapp and Signal, that means the app makers can’t read your messages – only you and the recipient can. With data, like Apple’s Advanced Data Protection, you control the encryption keys, preventing the service provider from accessing your information.
We’re focusing on three key areas, each with three specific demands:
- Keep your Promises: Companies have already announced these features, but haven’t released them.
- Facebook should use end-to-end encryption for group messages.
- Apple and google should deliver on their promise of interoperable end-to-end encryption of RCS.
- Bluesky should launch its promised end-to-end encryption for DMs.
- Defaults Matter: These features exist, but aren’t turned on automatically.
- Telegram should default to end-to-end encryption for DMs.
- WhatsApp should use end-to-end encryption for backups by default.
- Ring should enable end-to-end encryption for its cameras by default.
- Protect Our Data: These are new features companies should launch, especially as competitors already offer them.
- Google should launch end-to-end encryption for Google Authenticator backups.
- Google should offer end-to-end encryption for Android backup data.
- Apple and Google should offer an AI permissions per app option to block AI access to secure chat apps.
What is only half the problem. How is just as crucial.
