Kutai Timur Marks World AIDS Day with Call for equality and Collaboration
SANGATTA, Indonesia – kutai Timur (Kutim) commemorated World AIDS Day 2024 with a renewed focus on achieving equality for all individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. This year’s theme,”Equal Rights for all,Together We Can,” served as a powerful reminder of the need for collective action to end stigma,discrimination,and inequality in the fight against the disease.
Novel Tyty Paembonan, a member of the Kutai Timur DPRD and Chair of the Special Committee on the Draft Regional Regulation (Raperda) on HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections, emphasized that World AIDS Day is not merely a ceremonial event.
“This commemoration should serve as a reminder for all of us to continuously raise awareness and strengthen collaboration in addressing HIV/AIDS, especially in Kutai Timur,” paembonan stated.
Paembonan highlighted that Kutai Timur is in the final stages of finalizing a comprehensive regulation aimed at providing a strategic framework for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and stigma reduction.
“We recognize that HIV/AIDS is not just a health issue, but also a social issue. Thus, we need regulations that foster synergy between the government, community, and private sector,” Paembonan explained.
He stressed that individuals living with HIV can lead normal lives with regular treatment.
“The key is prevention. For those who haven’t been affected by HIV, don’t let it happen. The simplest way is to avoid risky sexual behavior and intravenous drug use,” Paembonan concluded.
