Saudi Arabia Makes Waves with New Endless Surf Pool

The synthetic surfing scene continues to expand globally, and the latest addition comes from an unexpected location: Saudi Arabia. A new Endless Surf pool has debuted at Adrena Red Sea, promising high-performance waves in what’s being described as one of the most ambitious surf park projects to date.

The 215-meter-wide lagoon is capable of generating waves reaching heights of up to 2.1 meters (approximately 7 feet), catering to both beginners and experienced surfers. Adrena Red Sea describes the facility as a “world-class environment designed for those looking to learn a new sport or for professionals seeking to perfect their edge in a controlled saltwater setting.”

This development isn’t occurring in isolation. Saudi Arabia is rapidly investing in sports and recreation infrastructure, and this surf park is a key component of that strategy. It joins other ambitious projects in the region, including Surf Abu Dhabi, which is set to host a World Surf League Championship Tour event in October. Another wave pool is also under construction in Bahrain, signaling a clear commitment to bringing wave-based water sports to the Middle East.

The Saudi surf park is part of the larger Qiddiya giga-project, located near Riyadh. Qiddiya is envisioned as a massive entertainment and sports hub, and the surf pool is just one element of the Aquarabia water theme park. Aquarabia, described as the largest water park in the region, will feature 22 rides and attractions, five of which are billed as world firsts. The park’s layout is divided into eight themed zones inspired by natural elements, offering a diverse range of experiences beyond surfing.

The Endless Surf technology powering the pool utilizes 32 programmable caissons to create customizable waves across four distinct zones. This allows for simultaneous sessions for surfers of varying skill levels. The pool itself measures 180 meters by 73 meters and holds over 10,000 cubic meters of water, and is designed with a canyon-style backdrop and rock facade wall to enhance the surfing experience.

While an official grand opening date for the Saudi Arabian pool hasn’t been announced, the project has been in development for some time. Initial plans for the Qiddiya surf park were announced in , with an initial target opening of . Construction was well underway by , with installation of 1,690 meters (roughly 5,545 feet) of water slide already completed.

Endless Surf, a division of WhiteWater, is also involved in another significant wave pool project in São Paulo, Brazil. Praia do Terras, located within the Terras de São José residential community, will offer 40-second rides and cater to members of the private condominium club. This demonstrates the growing global reach of the Endless Surf technology and the increasing demand for accessible, high-quality wave pools.

The Saudi Arabian project represents a significant investment in the future of surfing and water sports. By bringing world-class wave technology to the region, it aims to cultivate a new generation of surfers and provide a unique recreational experience for both residents and tourists. The combination of cutting-edge wave technology, a massive water park complex, and the broader ambitions of the Qiddiya project positions Saudi Arabia as a rising force in the global surf scene.

Beyond the surfing itself, Aquarabia promises a comprehensive entertainment experience. Rides like Wadi Tahaddi (Spinning Rapids), promising “intense centrifugal forces,” and Hyper Viper (Shoot the Chute), featuring a nearly 50-foot drop, add to the park’s appeal. The integration of dry attractions and competition-ready sports facilities further enhances its versatility.
