Coamo, Puerto Rico ‍- A major renewable energy project is poised to bring notable benefits⁣ to‌ Puerto Rico, with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) ‌conditionally committing⁢ to a $584.5⁤ million loan guarantee. the funding, part of the Biden⁢ administration’s inflation Reduction Act, will support Convergent Energy and Power, Inc. in developing a sprawling solar farm in Coamo and three independent ‌battery storage projects in Caguas, Peñuelas,⁢ and Ponce.

“Large-scale implementation of ⁢solar energy and battery storage can help benefit communities⁢ across the island by⁢ reducing Puerto Rico’s ⁣high energy costs, which are⁣ significantly higher‍ than the U.S.average,” the DOE stated⁤ in a⁣ press release.

The Coamo project will feature a 100-megawatt⁢ (MW) photovoltaic solar system paired with a 55.5 MW battery‍ storage system. ‌The Caguas, Peñuelas, and Ponce projects will collectively boast a capacity ⁢of 225 MW.

“The photovoltaic ⁤solar installation would supply approximately 200,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy annually directly⁤ to Puerto ‍Rico’s grid, and the standalone facilities would provide up to⁤ 900 MWh of storage capacity per year,” the DOE explained.

The⁢ Coamo project alone is ⁢projected to generate enough energy ⁤to power 19,000 homes annually, offering a much-needed boost to communities struggling⁤ with unreliable power grids ⁤and high energy costs.

“This ⁢project is expected ⁣to ⁣improve the reliability and stability of Puerto Rico’s grid by⁣ adding generation and‌ storage ⁣capacity near load centers,” the department ⁤emphasized.

Construction of the projects is ⁤expected to create 540 jobs,‍ providing a further economic boost⁢ to the ⁣island.

puerto Rico Inches ⁣Closer to Clean Energy Goals with Federal Backing for solar ‍Project

Coamo, puerto ‌Rico – A major ⁢solar‌ energy ⁤project in Coamo is one step closer to reality thanks‌ to a ⁣conditional loan commitment from the U.S. Department of⁤ Energy (DOE). Convergent Energy and ‍Power, the ‌developer behind the project, stands to receive up ⁢to ⁣$230 million to build a 150-megawatt solar⁤ farm and accompanying battery storage facility.

This‌ project⁢ is a significant step towards Puerto‍ Rico’s aspiring goal of achieving 100% clean energy ⁣generation by 2050, as outlined in the Puerto ⁣Rico Energy Policy Act. ⁣While the island ‌fell short‍ of its initial 20% renewable energy target in 2022, the DOE ‌believes projects like this can definately help bridge the gap.

“To help Puerto Rico achieve 100% clean energy‍ resources⁤ by 2050, the photovoltaic solar‌ system can generate power⁣ directly to Puerto Rico’s grid, ‌and the battery ‍installations can provide the necessary ⁣storage benefits for transmission system resilience,” the DOE stated.

The DOE emphasized the importance of community ⁤engagement in the project’s growth, requiring Convergent to ⁣actively involve local residents in decision-making processes. ⁣Additionally,‌ the agency mandates⁤ the implementation⁢ of‌ strong ⁢labor standards throughout the construction, operation, and warranty period of the‌ loan.

Frank Genova, Chief Financial Officer and co-founder of Convergent,⁢ expressed enthusiasm for ‌the project, stating, “Improving the⁢ reliability and sustainability of the grid in Puerto Rico ‌is essential. We applaud the ⁣Department of Energy‌ for recognizing Convergent Energy and power’s track record of experience in the energy storage and⁣ solar sectors through this conditional commitment from the U.S. department of‌ Energy Loan programs Office. We look forward to contributing to the modernization ⁢of ⁤puerto Rico’s electric grid and advancing its clean energy goals.”

Founded in 2011, Convergent boasts ⁤a portfolio of over 800 megawatts of operational or under-development energy storage and solar-plus-storage systems.‍ The Coamo ‌project ‌is one of 11 large-scale solar projects approved‌ by the Puerto Rico Energy ‍Bureau ⁣(NEPR) last⁤ year, collectively adding 855 megawatts of ‍capacity to‍ the island’s grid. Most of these projects have sought funding through DOE loans.

Federal Agency Greenlights $1 Billion Boost ⁤for‍ Puerto Rico Solar Projects

San ‌Juan, Puerto‍ Rico – In a major win for renewable energy⁢ in Puerto‍ Rico, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office has approved over $1 billion in financing for two large-scale solar projects. ‍

The agency⁣ announced the approval of a $150 million loan guarantee for Convergent‌ Energy + Power’s 100-megawatt solar‍ project‌ in humacao. This project is ‍expected to generate enough clean energy to power approximately 30,000 homes.

In addition, the Loan Programs Office⁢ granted a loan guarantee of up to $861.3 million to Clean Flexible Energy LLC, ‌a subsidiary of AES⁢ Corporation and⁢ Total ‍Energies USA. This funding will support the construction of solar farms in Guayama and Salinas, further bolstering Puerto Rico’s transition to renewable ‍energy sources.

These projects ‌represent a significant step towards⁣ Puerto Rico’s⁣ goal ⁢of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2050. ⁢The island has⁤ been actively pursuing clean energy ⁣solutions in the wake of devastating hurricanes that⁢ highlighted‍ the‍ vulnerability of its power grid.

“This is⁢ a game-changer for⁤ Puerto Rico,” said [Insert Name], a local ‍energy expert. “These projects will not only provide clean and reliable energy but also create⁣ jobs and stimulate economic growth.”

The ⁤Loan Programs Office’s ⁢decision underscores the federal government’s commitment to supporting clean energy development in Puerto Rico ⁤and across the United States.
