Oil Prices Rise Amid Middle East Tensions, Diesel supply Concerns
Updated June 17, 2025
Geopolitical instability in the Middle East is impacting global energy markets, with oil prices experiencing upward pressure. Israel’s “Operation Rising Lion,” targeting Iran’s nuclear capabilities, is a key factor, prompting concerns about potential disruptions to oil production and exports.
While initial price surges where moderate, anxieties resurfaced following statements from President Trump on Truth Social. He asserted Iran should have agreed to a previous deal and stressed they must not possess nuclear weapons. His comments followed evacuation warnings in parts of Tehran amid escalating airstrikes.
An Israeli ambassador in Washington had earlier hinted at a potential surprise attack on Iran, adding to the heightened state of alert. President Trump also cut short his attendance at the G7 meeting, returning to Washington due to the escalating situation.
Rising tanker rates reflect the increased risk premium in oil markets. Costs for shipping refined oil from the Middle East to East asia jumped nearly 20% in three sessions, while rates to East Africa soared over 40%. Reports of two tankers ablaze in the Gulf of Oman initially sparked fears of attacks, but the UAE National Guard later confirmed the incidents were due to a collision.
Diesel prices are outpacing gasoline and crude oil increases. Israeli strikes on the Sharon oil depot in Tehran, a major distribution hub, are fueling worries about diesel supply disruptions. Iran is a meaningful producer of medium-heavy sour crude, ideal for diesel refining.
Meanwhile, the European Union aims to eliminate all Russian natural gas exports by 2027. Hungary and Slovakia secured exemptions, allowing them to phase out existing contracts. The EU will also mandate companies to disclose details of their agreements with Russian gas providers.
Natural gas prices are also rising, driven by warmer weather forecasts and increased demand for cooling.LNG exports are being closely monitored, with maintenance at Sabine and Cameron LNG
