Energy Stockholm: Europe’s Largest LNG Bunker Vessel Christened in Rotterdam
The Energy Stockholm is Europe’s largest inland LNG bunker vessel. It has a capacity of 8000 m³ and was launched in Rotterdam on 13 November 2024. Saheera Ahmad, the Head of Business Development – Marine LNG for Shell, served as its godmother.
LNG Shipping owns and operates the vessel. It will be transferred to Shell Western LNG B.V. under a long-term charter. The Energy Stockholm will perform bunkering operations in Zeebrugge, Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam (ZARA). This vessel boosts Shell’s bunkering capacity in the ZARA area. It can bunker many types of vessels, including ferries and large container ships. Its LNG cargo handling system is versatile, working with both traditional tanks and membrane-type tanks.
This vessel is the second inland bunker vessel that Shell chartered from LNG Shipping. The first one, the LNG London, has a 3000 m³ capacity and launched in July 2019.
David Patron, Commercial Director for Oil/Chemicals/Gas at Sogestran, said the Energy Stockholm builds upon the operational knowledge gained from the LNG London. It features new technologies to optimize energy use and lower emissions.
The Energy Stockholm includes energy-efficient technologies. It has a hybrid-electric dual-fuel propulsion system using pure gas and diesel generators, which can run on biodiesel. Additionally, it can recover cargo boil-off gas for fuel.
This vessel is unique as the first LNG bunker ship for inland waterways to use batteries and shore power. It includes a 500 kWh battery pack, allowing it to operate on battery power for up to 30 minutes.
Victrol handles the operations for the Energy Stockholm.
