England’s Under-21 team will face Spain in the European Championship quarter-finals despite a 2-1 loss to Germany in their final group match in Slovakia. The defeat meant England finished as runners-up in Group B.
Lee Carsley’s squad needed a win in Nitra to secure first place in the group. However, even with Germany making important changes to their lineup, England struggled. Germany scored twice in the first half.
Ansgar Knauff, a winger for Eintracht Frankfurt, scored an extraordinary goal, and Nelson weiper, a forward from Mainz, added another with a header. These goals sealed the victory for Germany and set up England’s clash with Spain in Trnava on saturday. England previously defeated Spain in the final two years ago.
Bournemouth’s Alex Scott scored for England in the 76th minute, converting a cross from Omari Hutchinson to make the score 2-1. Though, they could not complete the comeback.
Despite the loss, Slovenia’s defeat to the Czech Republic ensured England’s progression to the next round.
Germany took an early lead just three minutes into the game. Lukas Ullrich delivered a diagonal ball into the box, which Jarell Quansah misjudged, allowing Knauff to control the ball and score past James Beadle.
Germany extended their lead before halftime. Knauff provided a cross to weiper, who headed the ball into the corner of the net, beating Charlie Cresswell and Jack Hinshelwood.
Harvey Elliott missed a chance for England, shooting over the bar. Elliot Anderson was also denied by a save from German goalkeeper Tjark Ernst.
A floodlight failure briefly interrupted the game near the end of the first half.
Although the floodlight was fixed during halftime, England continued to struggle, failing to pressure Germany despite Carsley making three substitutions.
hinshelwood missed a header in the 74th minute before Scott scored, giving England a glimmer of hope. Ernst then saved a header from Cresswell, as England’s comeback attempt fell short.
