Updated June 18, 2025
Karun Nair’s pivotal decision to play for Northamptonshire in England has revitalized his cricket career, paving the way for a return to India’s national team. After a period without competitive play in India, Nair sought opportunities overseas, a move that proved transformative.
Sadler, who worked closely with Nair at Northamptonshire, noted the impact of motivated overseas players. “Overseas players who come here with a point to prove, we usually get the best out of them,” Sadler said. “Karun had scored a Test triple hundred for India but hadn’t played in a while. he was hungry and resolute to make an impact.”
Nair’s calm demeanor and focused approach quickly made an impression. Sadler recalls Nair’s composed performance during a challenging match at Edgbaston. Despite tough pitch conditions, Nair played with remarkable composure, knowing his role and attacking strategically.
His performance in 2023, which included 249 runs in three matches and a 150-run innings against Surrey, led to another contract with northamptonshire. In 2024, Nair continued to excel, amassing 487 runs in seven matches, including a double century. Beyond the runs, his attitude stood out.
“His attitude was splendid. He worked so hard and was very professional,” said Sadler, now assistant coach at Yorkshire. “He was there for every training session, and when it came to batting in a match, he was just so focused and never gave his wicket away.”
While Nair had previously scored runs in domestic cricket, his time with Northamptonshire significantly boosted his chances for national selection. The demanding nature of county cricket, with its varied pitches and relentless schedule, tested and refined his skills.
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir acknowledged the role county cricket played in Nair’s resurgence. “It’s always good to have the experience of Karun. he played county cricket there, and he is in superb form. His experience will come in handy,” Gambhir said at a pre-tour news conference in Mumbai on June 5.
Following a 204-run performance against the England Lions in Canterbury earlier in June, Nair is anticipated to join India’s middle order for the first Test at Headingley.
His coach, Madyalkar, expressed confidence in Nair’s performance. “I think Karun will definitely play the first match because he is more experienced in playing there,” Madyalkar said. “He will score a hundred.”
