England vs West Indies: Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont hundreds set up 108-run win
England Women’s Cricket: New Gameplan Leads to ODI Win
Updated May 31, 2025
England’s women’s cricket team demonstrated a new, strategic approach to their 50-over game, securing a decisive victory. The team, under new leadership, is emphasizing a clearer gameplan, moving away from previous strategies.
The first opportunity to put this into practice saw England’s batters deliver a strong performance. While the West Indies’ bowling attack and fielding were not at their sharpest, England’s opening pair, Jones and Beaumont, constructed a solid foundation.
After 25 overs, they reached 121-0, prompting some to suggest a more aggressive approach earlier in the innings. However, the strategy was evident: adjust to the slow bowling, preserve wickets, and then accelerate in the final overs. England’s cricket gameplan saw them play attacking shots 55% of the time in the first 10 overs, dropping to 45% in the next 10, before surging to 77% between overs 21 and 30 once the openers passed 50.
Their opening partnership marked England’s fifth-highest in women’s ODI history and the highest against the West Indies, providing the ideal platform for Sciver-Brunt to capitalize. Lamb, in an unfamiliar late-order role, joined Sciver-Brunt, who propelled England past 300 with ease, hitting six fours and a six.
Capsey, replacing the injured Knight, contributed a rapid 24 from 19 balls. The total proved too much for the West Indies, whose batting heavily relies on their captain, Matthews. This ODI success highlights the effectiveness of England’s new batting acceleration strategy.
What’s next
England will look to refine their strategy further as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup, aiming to build on this initial success and solidify their new approach.
