Updated May 25, 2025
Following a Test victory, England’s Ben Stokes commended Shoaib Bashir for demonstrating increased patience on the field. Stokes noted that Bashir has improved at building pressure and avoiding impatience when seeking dismissals.
Stokes emphasized Bashir’s competitive spirit, noting that the bowler thrives when batsmen challenge him, forcing him to strategize more. Technical adjustments where also implemented during the zimbabwe match to refine Bashir’s bowling. These adjustments included moving closer to the stumps, which lead to a reduction in deliveries drifting down the leg side, from 32% to 17%.
A key factor in Bashir’s success was his fuller length, with 41% of his deliveries landing in the full region, up from 26% previously. This adjustment is crucial for an off-spinner, enabling them to draw batters forward.
Stokes expressed excitement about Bashir’s potential, considering his limited experience before his Test debut. He believes Bashir will continue to improve with the support of the coaching staff, including spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel. Stokes hopes that Bashir’s continued success will validate the decision to include him in the team.
“That is something he’s definitely got a lot better at,” Ben Stokes, England Captain said.
What’s next
Bashir is expected to continue working with the coaching staff to further refine his technique and build on his recent success in upcoming matches.
