Portugal Basketball Star Luis Domingos Aims for Wheelchair Rugby league Success

Luis Domingos, a Portuguese international in wheelchair basketball, has been named too England’s national performance squad for wheelchair rugby league. Domingos, who currently plays club rugby for the Castleford Tigers in the Wheelchair Championship, is one of three uncapped players hoping to secure a place on the autumn tour to australia. This presents a unique prospect for Domingos to showcase his athletic prowess in wheelchair rugby league.
Domingos,along with Josh Edwards from Hull FC and Finlay O’Neill of Halifax Panthers,are among nine players added to the initial list of eight selected in May. Head coach Coyd will select a final squad of 10 players from this group to travel to Australia in October for a four-match tour.The England wheelchair rugby team is looking to strengthen its roster with versatile athletes like Domingos.
The tour culminates in a two-Test series against Australia on Oct. 30 and Nov. 2, with both matches held in Gold Coast.Prior to the test matches, the squad will play two warm-up matches against state sides: New South Wales in Sydney on Oct. 24 and Queensland on the Sunshine Coast on Oct. 27. The England wheelchair rugby team is preparing for intense competition.
Domingos previously played wheelchair rugby league for Leeds before transitioning to basketball. He later returned to rugby, joining Castleford and scoring the winning try against North Wales crusaders to secure the Wheelchair Challenge Trophy for second-tier clubs in April.
“He’s a really exciting athlete in his chair and is now keen to test himself in wheelchair rugby league again after representing Portugal in basketball – quite a coup for our program,” Coyd said.
O’neill contributed to Halifax’s victory over London Roosters in the Wheelchair Challenge Cup final. All three uncapped players impressed during recent trials at the University of York.Nathan Holmes and Wayne Boardman,also from Halifax’s cup-winning team,are among the nine additions to Coyd’s squad. Mason Billington and Jason Owen from the Roosters, Tristan Norfolk from hull FC, and Chris Haynes from Sheffield Eagles complete the list of new squad members.The england wheelchair rugby team is building a strong and diverse squad.
