Enhancing Mental Health and Physical Activity: Insights from the University of Iowa Forum

Enhancing Mental Health and Physical Activity: Insights from the University of Iowa Forum

November 21, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

University of Iowa College of Public Health Forum Highlights

At the University of Iowa College of Public Health forum, community leaders discussed mental health and physical activity. The event took place at the Marshalltown Community College.

Mental Health Insights

Paul Daniel, Executive Director of Center Associates, revealed that one in five people face mental health struggles. He noted that out of every five individuals, only two or three seek help. He urged attendees to understand that mental health impacts everyone around them—friends, family, and coworkers.

Daniel emphasized that mental health issues often stem from chemical imbalances. He illustrated this by sharing a story about a woman who felt unworthy due to her upbringing. He said, “To help people grow, they must address their roots, just like a tree needs strong roots to grow tall.”

Since opening the Center Associates Urgent Care, Daniel reported 1,700 visits. He pointed out the lack of mental health providers and stressed the need for openness about mental health discussions. He stated, “We must remove the stigma and normalize seeking help.”

Importance of Physical Activity

Kim Jass-Ramirez, CEO of YMCA, spoke about physical activity. She recommended 150 minutes of cardiovascular exercise weekly and advocated for enjoyable ways to exercise. She highlighted the need to reduce sedentary behavior with the mantra, “Move more. Sit less.”

Jass-Ramirez pointed out that short activities, like 30 minutes a day broken into ten-minute segments, can make a difference. She also emphasized the importance of social connections, noting that isolation harms health.

Community Health Initiatives

Natoshia Askelson, deputy director at the Prevention Research Center for Rural Health, discussed the 27% of Marshall County residents reporting no leisure activity. She encouraged using local resources, such as parks and the YMCA, to boost activity levels. Askelson’s program, Active Iowa, promotes physical activity in rural communities by offering resources and incentives.

Sydney Grewell, Marshall County Public Health Director, stressed the need for regular checkups and vaccinations. She noted a decline in vaccination rates due to the COVID-19 pandemic, warning that this could lead to outbreaks of diseases like measles.

Diane Rohlman, director of the Healthier Workforce Center of the Midwest, also spoke at the forum, adding to the dialogue about community health support.
