Enzo Trossero, Captain of Champions, Reflects on a Storied Career
Enzo Trossero, the iconic captain who led Independiente to glory in the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup, has recently released his memoir, “La Historia del Vikingo.” The book offers a candid look into his life and career, revealing stories from his time alongside footballing legends and recounting unexpected experiences.
Trossero’s career spanned both Argentina and abroad, but he is most strongly identified with Independiente, where he was the last captain to lift the coveted Libertadores and Intercontinental trophies for the club. Described as a “winner, frontal and passionate,” Trossero’s personality shone through on and off the pitch.
The defender fondly remembers playing alongside some of the greatest talents in football history. “Playing alongside Bochini and Maradona was very simple, because they were two geniuses of football, but with logical differences,” Trossero recalled. He noted Maradona’s left-footedness and goal-scoring ability, contrasting it with Bochini’s right-footedness and exceptional intelligence. “It was extraordinary to be in the same squad with them both and also with Beto Alonso, another phenomenon.”
Trossero’s journey to the top began with a debut in Primera División 50 years ago, on April 21, 1972, with Colón against River at the Monumental stadium, a match they lost 4-0. He had arrived from Sportivo Belgrano de San Francisco (Córdoba) after performing well in a couple of friendly matches. Both Newell’s and Colón expressed interest, but Colón offered more money, securing his transfer at the age of 18. Shortly after, Hugo Villaverde debuted, and the two formed an excellent defensive partnership, both on the field and in their personal lives.
“We understood each other perfectly, we were friends and we concentrated together,” Trossero said of his relationship with Villaverde. He even called upon Villaverde to be his assistant coach later in his career, a partnership that continued until Villaverde decided to step away from football.
Beyond the pitch, Trossero’s life has been filled with remarkable experiences. He reportedly once found himself entrusted with the care of a Rolls Royce belonging to Diego Maradona, as detailed in a recent article coinciding with the book launch. He also shared a unique encounter with Bob Marley, though details of that meeting remain scarce.
The release of “La Historia del Vikingo” has prompted reflection on Trossero’s career and his place in Argentine football history. He is remembered not only for his leadership and skill but also for his directness and passion, qualities that defined him as a player and continue to resonate in his storytelling.
Trossero’s career wasn’t without its challenges. He faced scrutiny from prominent managers like Menotti and Bilardo, reportedly experiencing “displantes” – confrontations – with them, particularly regarding his exclusion from the national team. These moments, along with his triumphs, are explored in detail within the pages of his memoir.
While the book delves into his successes with Independiente, it also touches upon personal struggles, including his battle with illness and his experience with mandatory military service. These experiences, combined with his on-field achievements, paint a comprehensive portrait of a man who embodies the spirit of Argentine football.
The legacy of Enzo Trossero extends beyond trophies and accolades. He represents a generation of players who defined an era of Argentine football, and his story continues to inspire fans and players alike. His memoir offers a valuable insight into the life of a true captain and a champion.
