The Fallout in East Palestine
Internal emails from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reveal a disturbing pattern of behavior following the February 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.Rather than addressing concerns about potential health risks, the agency appears to have systematically worked to discredit an self-reliant scientist who uncovered elevated toxin levels and tracked local residents who voiced their anxieties.
This revelation directly contradicts the EPA’s initial assurances to residents that it was safe to return home after the controlled burn of vinyl chloride and other hazardous materials. The agency’s actions raise serious questions about transparency, public safety, and the prioritization of narrative control over genuine environmental protection.
Independent Findings Contradict Agency Claims
Following the derailment and subsequent burn, independent testing expert Scott Smith discovered elevated levels of dioxins in the soil around East palestine. These findings directly challenged the EPA’s initial assessments and prompted concerns about long-term health impacts for the community.
In the spring of 2023, after NewsNation publicized Smith’s results, former EPA administrator Judith Enck urged the agency to consider his data. Rather of engaging with the independent findings, the EPA allegedly launched a campaign to gather Smith’s personal information, monitor his movements, and even circulate photos of his dog to over 50 employees. NewsNation reported documenting drones hovering near Smith, leading him to believe he was under surveillance.
A Pattern of Control and Disinformation
The EPA’s actions weren’t limited to targeting the independent scientist. Emails also indicate that the agency was tracking residents who were expressing concerns and felt ignored by the EPA. Lesley Pacey, with the Government Accountability Project, described the agency’s behavior as prioritizing “controlling the narrative” and downplaying potential long-term health consequences. Pacey stated, “They were definitely controlling the narrative of nothing to see here, no long-term health impacts.”
smith, who has visited East Palestine over 30 times for testing, expressed frustration that taxpayer funds were being used for surveillance rather than comprehensive environmental analysis. He stated, ”They don’t want to look for the full spectrum of chemicals that I look for, and instead of sitting down with me and having a dialog for the benefit of the community, they launched this smear campaign.” He believes this is not an isolated incident but a “systemic thing.”
Resident Concerns and calls for Accountability
Jami Wallace, a resident of East Palestine who was also reportedly surveilled, voiced the sentiment of many in the community. “We know, everyone knows, the EPA knows…that we got screwed from the beginning,” she said. She emphasized the need for the current administration to acknowledge the mistakes made and address the long-term health impacts experienced by residents.
EPA Response and Ongoing Review
In a statement, the EPA acknowledged being “very concerned by claims that have come to light over the past few months.” The agency stated its commitment to “maximum transparency” and announced a thorough review of decisions made following the train derailment, with the goal of ensuring the health and safety of the East Palestine community.
