The store’s 88/12 revenue split, where developers receive 88% of the revenue and Epic games takes 12%, contrasts sharply with Steam’s more common 70/30 split. While Steam boasts a larger player base, some developers find the Epic Games Store’s financial incentives appealing.
New Revenue Policy: 100% Revenue for First $1 Million
Following its legal victory against Apple regarding App Store commissions, Epic Games announced a new policy designed to further empower developers. Under this new model, developers will receive 100% of the revenue generated from their games on the Epic Games Store until they reach $1 million in earnings.
Custom ‘Webshops’ Offer Commission-free Sales
In addition to the revenue policy change, Epic Games is introducing ‘Webshops,’ personalized storefronts integrated within the Epic Games Store. These Webshops allow developers to sell additional content directly to players without paying commissions to Epic. This system aims to help studios avoid the 30% commissions typically charged by companies like Apple and google in their respective app stores.
Players Benefit Through Rewards Program
To incentivize players to use these webshops, Epic Games will return 5% of the value of each purchase made in these stores to the players. This reward system allows players to accumulate credit within the Epic Games Store, which can then be used to purchase games or in-game content.
While the Epic Games Store continues to evolve, these changes could position it as an attractive platform for small and medium-sized studios looking to maximize their profits.
