Epic Games Store on Play Store: Google Appeal Denied
Epic Games secures “Total Victory” Against Google in Antitrust Battle, Paving Way for Play Store Debut
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has declared a “total victory” for the company following a recent court verdict, a decision that could fundamentally alter how Android apps are distributed. The ruling, according to Sweeney, will permit the Epic Games Store to be listed on the Google Play store, eliminating the need for users to manually sideload the app.
While the exact legal standing of Google’s ability to block this debut during the ongoing appeals process remains somewhat unclear, Sweeney’s public statement strongly suggests that Google can no longer prevent the Epic Games Store from appearing on its official app marketplace.google, though, has indicated its intention to appeal the decision further, a move that will escalate the legal battle to the US Supreme Court.A spokesperson for Google stated, “This decision will substantially harm user safety, limit choice, and undermine the innovation that has always been central to the Android ecosystem. Our top priority remains protecting our users, developers and partners, and maintaining a secure platform as we continue our appeal.”
The court’s verdict specifically addressed Google’s practices, noting that “Google’s own expert conceded that Google would be able to meet these difficulties with the same technological criteria it uses for other third-party software applications already on the Play Store.” The ruling further clarified that the injunction “only compels that Google treat those software products the same way that it treats other products already offered on the platform.” This suggests that Google’s own internal standards for other third-party apps should apply to the Epic Games Store, effectively leveling the playing field. This landmark ruling could have far-reaching implications for app distribution on Android, potentially opening the door for more third-party app stores and challenging Google’s long-standing control over its ecosystem. The ongoing legal saga between Epic Games and Google continues to be a notable growth in the tech industry, with the supreme Court’s involvement promising a definitive resolution.
