Aidan O’brien celebrated his 11th Betfred Derby win as Lambourn, ridden by Wayne, lead nearly the entire race at Epsom. The victory highlights O’Brien’s continued success in the prestigious event.
lazy Griff, trained by Charlie Johnston, trailed Lambourn to finish three and three-quarter lengths behind. Joseph O’Brien’s Tennessee Stud secured third place in the race.
O’brien praised Wayne’s ride, emphasizing his hard work and strategic approach. He noted Lambourn’s straightforward nature and stamina, which allowed Wayne to take an early led.
The win is particularly special, O’Brien noted, as Lambourn’s sire, Australia, also won the Derby. He added that Australia’s offspring are known for thier uncomplicated nature, mirroring their sire.
Lambourn’s earlier performance included a second-place finish to Delacroix before winning at Chester. O’Brien mentioned that Ryan, who rode Lambourn at Chester, recognized the horse’s potential but couldn’t ride him in the Derby.
O’Brien suggested the Irish Derby could be Lambourn’s next target, adding that the horse has the potential to run even longer distances. He also commented on the performances of Ryan and Colin Keane, suggesting track conditions may have affected their horses.
“Wayne gave him him an unbelievable ride. I’m delighted for Wayne, he’s a great fellow, he does so much hard work,” O’Brien said.
What’s next
Looking ahead, Lambourn may compete in the Irish Derby, with longer races also a possibility given his stamina and uncomplicated running style.
