Oaks Day at Epsom: Weather Watch and Calandagan’s Coronation Cup Bid
Updated June 6, 2025
Epsom Downs is set for Oaks Day, but weather conditions are causing concern. Racing professionals are closely monitoring the skies, wondering how the ground will affect both Friday’s Oaks and the Derby. Despite blue skies, earlier rain has created uncertainty.
Andrew Cooper, clerk of the course, noted the challenges of maintaining the grass during a prolonged dry spell followed by recent rainfall.According to The Jockey Club, Epsom recorded 4.8mm of rain as midnight, bringing the seven-day total to 11.4mm. The current going is good to soft, good in places.
In oaks betting, Desert Flower remains the favorite, despite concerns about the 12-furlong trip. Whirl has drifted, while Minnie Hauk, ridden by Ryan Moore, is a solid second-favorite.
The Coronation Cup, a group one race for older horses, features Calandagan. The gelding is favored to win after a series of strong performances.
“I’ve never known such a prolonged dry period from March, April and through into May, so it’s been challenging,” Cooper said Wednesday.
