Epstein Files Trigger Political Resignations and Investigations Across Europe and US
The fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal continues to reverberate across Europe and the United States, triggering resignations, prompting investigations, and tarnishing the reputations of prominent figures. A recent release of approximately 3 million pages of documents related to Epstein’s case by the US Department of Justice on January 29th has renewed scrutiny of his extensive network and his connections to high-profile individuals worldwide.
While the appearance of a name in the released documents does not automatically imply criminal wrongdoing, the disclosures are already having significant political and institutional consequences. Epstein died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges involving underage girls.
United Kingdom Faces Political Crisis
The United Kingdom is experiencing the most dramatic political impact from the revelations. Peter Mandelson, a former minister and UK ambassador to the US, resigned from the Labour Party on February 1st following new disclosures regarding his ties to Epstein. He subsequently stepped down from the House of Lords on February 4th. Documents indicate three payments of $25,000 each were made in 2003 and 2004 to accounts linked to Mandelson.
France Rocked by Resignations and Investigation
France has also been shaken by the Epstein affair, with former Culture Minister Jack Lang resigning as president of the Arab World Institute on Saturday, February 9th, following revelations about his past financial links to the convicted sex offender. French authorities have opened an investigation into Lang and his daughter, Caroline, on suspicion of “aggravated tax fraud laundering.”
Lang’s name appears over 600 times in the released US Department of Justice files, detailing exchanges between the two men spanning seven years until Epstein’s death. Caroline Lang, a former executive at Warner Bros France, also resigned as managing director of France’s Independent Producer Syndicate after documents revealed her business relationship with Epstein.
In 2016, Caroline Lang partnered with Epstein in a company called Pyrtanée LLC, focused on purchasing works by emerging French artists. She was named as a beneficiary of €5 million in Epstein’s will, though she has denied receiving any funds.
According to reports, Lang and Epstein’s relationship began around 2012, introduced by Woody Allen and his partner Soon-Yi Previn during a dinner in Paris. Epstein reportedly provided gifts and favors, and Caroline Lang managed the connection, establishing a company and handling communications due to Lang’s limited English and difficulty managing details.
Epstein reportedly proposed a fund of $20 million to Lang for purchasing artwork, with a 50/50 profit-sharing arrangement. Caroline Lang responded with enthusiasm, stating, “Wow!” However, she had previously expressed concerns about Epstein’s past conviction for sex crimes.
Other European Figures Implicated
The fallout extends beyond the UK and France. The released documents have also implicated other European figures, including Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, and Princess Ingrid Alexandra, as well as Council of Europe Secretary-General Thorbjorn Jagland and Norway’s Ambassador to the United Nations Mona Juul. The nature of their connections to Epstein is still being investigated.
French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the situation publicly on Monday, February 10th, emphasizing that the matter primarily concerns the United States and that the American justice system should be allowed to proceed independently. He also noted the proliferation of conspiracy theories surrounding the case and called for thorough journalistic investigation.
The investigation into Lang and his daughter is ongoing, with the French prosecutor’s office focusing on allegations of “blanqueo de capitales y fraude fiscal” (money laundering and tax fraud). The Epstein case continues to unfold, promising further revelations and potential consequences for individuals across Europe and the US.
