Equatorial Guinea Official Sentenced to Eight Years for embezzlement
A former director of Equatorial Guinea’s National Agency for Financial Inquiry (ANIF), Baltasar Ebang Ebanga, was sentenced to eight years in prison on August 27, 2025, by the bioko Provincial Court for embezzlement of public funds. He was also fined 125.4 million CFA francs, equivalent to approximately 190,000 euros, according to Hilario Mitogo, CEO of the Supreme Court of Justice of malabo.
Ebang ebanga was tried alongside five other senior Equatorial Guinean officials. The court found that the group had diverted between 5 and 125 million CFA francs for personal use, fraudulently claiming the funds were for legitimate travel expenses and missions already covered by the state.
The case comes after a period of public scrutiny for Ebang Ebanga. In November 2024, sexually explicit videos allegedly featuring him circulated on social media, with some reportedly filmed within the Ministry of finance and involving prominent local women. While the sextapes did not directly factor into the embezzlement charges, they contributed to a climate of heightened attention surrounding his conduct and potential abuses of power.
This sentencing signals a potential crackdown on corruption within Equatorial Guinea’s government, though the long-term impact remains to be seen. The country has faced persistent criticism regarding transparency and accountability, especially in relation to its meaningful oil wealth. The outcome of this case, and any subsequent efforts to recover the embezzled funds, will be closely watched by international observers and citizens alike.
