– A French lycée, Lycée Jean-Baylet, is deepening its engagement with the European Union’s Erasmus+ program, expanding vocational training opportunities for its students through increased international partnerships. The school, located in Valence-d’Agen, France, has been developing these mobility projects for its professional baccalaureate students over the past three years.
The program facilitates work placements and study periods abroad, aligning with the broader goals of Erasmus+ to empower individuals and organizations across Europe, and beyond. Recent initiatives include stages – internships – in Slovenia and Denmark, with a new partnership established in Italy set to launch this October. This expansion reflects a growing trend in vocational education, as highlighted by recent analysis of the Erasmus+ program’s future, which emphasizes the importance of international experience for students in vocational education and training (VET).
Initially, students specializing in electricity and logistics undertook three-week internships in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in the spring of 2024. Last year, students in road transport (CTRM) were given the opportunity to travel to Denmark. This year, five mechanics – specializing in light and heavy vehicles – will begin internships in the Treviso region of northern Italy in October. This Italian partnership is particularly noteworthy, fostering a strong connection between the lycée in France and a professional school in Italy.
Building Collaborative Relationships Through Exchange
The impetus for these projects comes from teachers Cécile Delon and Mathieu Pouyer, who initiated the Erasmus+ projects three years ago. The Italian partnership began last autumn with a reciprocal visit by the two teachers to observe the Italian vocational training system. This week, two Italian teachers visited Lycée Jean-Baylet, welcomed by the school principal, M. Cabanes, and his team.
The visiting educators attended classes in English, geography, mechanics, electricity, and science and technology. They toured the school’s professional workshops, leading to discussions about pedagogical practices. Despite a language barrier – the Italian teachers do not speak French – communication was facilitated through English, with assistance from Isabelle Cros, whose fluency in Italian proved invaluable.
The exchange is set to continue in the spring with the arrival of ten Italian mechanics for a two-week internship in the Tarn-et-Garonne region of France. This reciprocal arrangement underscores the program’s commitment to mutual learning and skill development.
The expansion of Erasmus+ to include southern Mediterranean countries, as recently reported by politico.eu, further highlights the EU’s dedication to fostering international collaboration in education and training. While this specific expansion doesn’t directly involve Lycée Jean-Baylet, it demonstrates the broader strategic importance the EU places on these programs.
The benefits of such programs extend beyond the acquisition of technical skills. The school emphasizes the importance of these exchanges in fostering understanding and solidarity between nations, particularly at a time when international relations can be strained. The program provides students and educators with valuable cross-cultural experiences, enhancing their adaptability and broadening their perspectives.
Erasmus+ supports work placements and study periods for vocational education learners, apprentices, and recent graduates, as detailed on the official Erasmus+ website. The program’s focus on VET is crucial, given the ongoing need to address skills gaps and promote employment opportunities across Europe. The Lycée Jean-Baylet’s proactive approach to leveraging Erasmus+ demonstrates a commitment to providing its students with a competitive edge in the global job market.
The success of the Lycée Jean-Baylet’s Erasmus+ initiatives serves as a model for other vocational schools seeking to expand their international reach and provide their students with enriching educational experiences. The program’s emphasis on practical training, combined with cross-cultural exchange, positions students for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
