Eric Dane Dies at 53 After ALS Battle – Grey’s Anatomy & Euphoria Star Remembered

Eric Dane, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Euphoria’ Star, Dies at 53 After ALS Battle

– Eric Dane, celebrated for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, affectionately known as “McSteamy,” on the television series Grey’s Anatomy, died on Thursday at the age of 53, his family announced. The actor’s passing comes less than a year after he publicly revealed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

For 15 years, Dane captivated audiences as a plastic surgeon on the long-running medical drama. He also recently appeared in the series Euphoria, and had expressed his intention to return to the set for its third season, even after receiving his diagnosis.

“Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” his family shared in a statement, as reported by People magazine and other news outlets. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that results in the loss of connection between the brain and the muscles. It is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the Hall of Fame baseball player who succumbed to the illness in 1941 at the age of 37.

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the family’s statement continued.

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane grew up in the Bay Area, attending Sequoia High School in Redwood City and San Mateo High School in San Mateo before moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. He began with smaller roles in the 1990s, appearing in television series such as “Saved by the Bell,” “The Wonder Years,” “Roseanne,” and “Married… with Children.” He gained wider recognition in 2000 with a recurring role as Dr. Wyatt Cooper on “Gideon’s Crossing” and made his film debut that same year in Rich Cowan’s “The Basket.”

Dane’s portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy cemented his status as a prominent television actor. The character, nicknamed “McSteamy” by his female colleagues, became a fan favorite. His work on Euphoria showcased his range as an actor, portraying the complex character of Cal Jacobs.

The family has requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time. Dane is remembered fondly by fans for his contributions to television and his recent advocacy work surrounding ALS.
