Eric Dane, the actor best known for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan on the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53. His passing comes less than a year after he publicly revealed his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Dane’s family shared the news on Thursday, releasing a statement that spoke to his courageous battle with the disease and the love surrounding him in his final days. “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement read. They also noted he was surrounded by friends, his wife Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were “the center of his world.” The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support he received from fans.
Born in San Francisco, Dane began his career in the 1990s with guest appearances on television series like Saved by the Bell and Roseanne. He gained wider recognition with a recurring role on the popular fantasy series Charmed, playing a significant character in the show’s fifth and sixth seasons (2003-2004). However, it was his arrival on Grey’s Anatomy in 2006 that catapulted him to mainstream fame.
Initially appearing in the second season, Dane quickly became a fan favorite as the charismatic and often reckless Dr. Mark Sloan, earning the nickname “McSteamy.” He became a series regular the following year and remained a central figure until his departure at the end of the eighth season in 2011, with subsequent guest appearances. He revisited the role in a dream sequence in 2021, offering a poignant moment for longtime viewers.
Dane’s on-screen presence was often defined by a confident swagger, famously exemplified by a memorable scene in Grey’s Anatomy where his character emerged from the shower wrapped in a towel. Reflecting on the moment years later, Dane remarked, “I knew when I shot it that it could be memorable,” adding with a touch of humor, “I just know I was walking out of a bathroom while a guy behind me was blowing smoke at me.”
Beyond television, Dane maintained a consistent presence in film, appearing in projects such as X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Marley & Me (2008), Burlesque (2010), and more recently, Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024). His film roles showcased a versatility that complemented his television work.
In recent years, Dane took on the role of Cal Jacobs, a complex and troubled patriarch, in the HBO teen drama Euphoria. The role allowed him to explore darker and more nuanced characters, further demonstrating his range as an actor.
Dane’s diagnosis of ALS in 2025 brought a new focus to his public life. He spoke openly about the challenges of living with the disease, revealing he had been experiencing symptoms since around 2023, including a gradual loss of control over his arms. Despite the prognosis, he continued to work and became an advocate for ALS awareness and research, participating in fundraising efforts for potential treatments.
In an interview with Good Morning America last year, Dane acknowledged the difficult road ahead but emphasized his determination to cherish time with his family and continue pursuing his passion for acting. “What matters most is that I still get to spend time with my kids and still get to work a little bit,” he said.
Eric Dane is survived by his wife, actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. His passing marks a significant loss for the entertainment industry and for the many fans who admired his talent and charisma.
