Eric Dane, the beloved “Grey’s Anatomy” star, shared poignant final words with his daughters, Billie and Georgia, in a recently released interview, just days after his death following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The interview, part of the Netflix docuseries “Famous Last Words,” was filmed in November 2025 and offers a deeply personal glimpse into the actor’s reflections on life, love, and legacy.

Dane, 53, passed away on Thursday, surrounded by family, after publicly disclosing his diagnosis with the debilitating disease. The nearly hour-long conversation, conducted by television producer Brad Falchuk, reveals a man grappling with his mortality yet determined to impart wisdom to those he loved most.

Throughout the interview, Dane spoke candidly about the impact of ALS, noting it had a surprising effect on his outlook. “It made me a little bit softer, a little bit more open,” he said. He described a sense of liberation that came with facing his own limitations, realizing he was “absolutely more than enough.”

Dane reflected on a life that began with emotional shutdown at a young age, following the sudden death of his father from a gunshot wound when he was just seven years old. He said it wasn’t until his ALS diagnosis decades later that he felt his spirit truly return.

The actor, known for his role as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and more recently for his work in “Euphoria,” acknowledged a history of struggling with addiction, having been sober for nine years before a relapse during a writers’ strike. He spoke of finding solace and purpose in his work, stating, “That love eventually got me through my darkest hours, my darkest days, my darkest year.”

A final message to his daughters

In the most moving moments of the interview, Dane turned directly to the camera, addressing Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14. His voice trembled with emotion as he shared four life lessons gleaned from his experience with ALS.

“Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you,” he said, offering those words as his final message.

Dane encouraged his daughters to “live right now in the present,” acknowledging his own past tendency to dwell on regrets and anxieties. He explained that he had spent years “wallowing and worrying in self-pity, shame and doubt,” but that the disease forced him to focus on the here and now. “The past contains regrets. The future remains unknown, so you have to live now,” he said. “The present is all you have. Treasure it. Cherish every moment.”

He also urged them to “fall in love” – not necessarily with a romantic partner, but with something that ignites their passion and brings them joy. For Dane, that passion was acting, a pursuit that “doesn’t define me, but it excites me.”

Dane, who separated from Rebecca Gayheart, the mother of his children, in 2017, though they never finalized their divorce, spoke fondly of their enduring friendship, stating he had “never fallen in love with another woman as deeply as I fell in love with Rebecca.”

He concluded by imploring his daughters to “fight with every ounce of your being, and with dignity,” expressing hope that he had demonstrated the ability to face even the most daunting challenges with grace. “I hope I’ve demonstrated that you can face anything. You can face the end of your days, you can face hell, with dignity,” he said.

Dane’s final words serve as a powerful testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit and a loving father’s desire to leave a lasting legacy for his children.
