Erick Thohir Champions Care for Indonesian Migrant Workers: Enhanced Protections & Financial Support Initiatives
Support for Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Protection
Minister Erick Thohir of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) supports the protection of Indonesian migrant workers, known as PMIs. He spoke after meeting with Minister Abdul Kadir Karding, who oversees migrant workers’ protection.
Thohir stated that his ministry will enhance facilities for migrants at airports. He recognized the need for proper support before their departure and upon their return. He also backed initiatives aimed at improving special lounges for PMIs, ensuring their health overseas, and expanding access to people’s business credit (KUR).
Thohir highlighted that migrant workers play a significant role in the government’s agenda. He asserted that the program aims to offer comprehensive protection and create better job opportunities for Indonesians. He stressed the importance of safeguarding these workers from exploitation by lenders and dishonest individuals.
He emphasized that working abroad should benefit migrants and their families, rather than add financial burdens. The State-Owned Bank Association (Himbara), including BNI, is prepared to support the KUR program to aid PMIs.
The meeting marks a strategic partnership between BUMN and the Ministry of Migrant Workers’ Protection. Both aim to provide proper protection and financial assistance to Indonesian migrant workers.
