Jakarta, Indonesia – Indonesia’s national football team, featuring a predominantly under-22 squad, kicked off their AFF Championship campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Myanmar at Thuwunna stadium on Monday.
Captain Asnawi Mangkualam Bahar secured the lone goal in the 75th minute, propelling Indonesia to a crucial three points in their opening match.
PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir lauded the team’s performance,recognizing the challenge of fielding a young squad in a high-stakes tournament.
“praise be to God, we were able to secure a win in our opening match. Every opening game is tough, especially with the majority of our players being under 22 years old,” Thohir said.
Thohir expressed his delight at seeing these young players gain valuable experience on the international stage.
“This is a great start. Most of the players in this ASEAN Cup squad are regulars in the domestic league, meaning they are gaining valuable playing time representing their country,” he added.
Looking ahead, Thohir urged the team, the youngest in the tournament, to continue improving throughout the competition.
“I hope our players can continue to elevate their performance,” he said.
Indonesia will now prepare to host Laos in their second group stage match at Manahan Stadium on Thursday.
