November 15, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

Erik Johnson, a defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers, is set to play his 1,000th NHL game. This milestone reflects his dedication and resilience after facing many injuries throughout his career.

Johnson acknowledges that he could have reached this milestone sooner if not for significant injuries. He has endured challenges including knee injuries and concussions. Despite these setbacks, he focused on recovery and training. “I just love coming to the rink and playing,” Johnson said.

At 36 years old, Johnson will be the 403rd player in NHL history to achieve 1,000 games. He has played for the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Buffalo Sabres, and the Flyers, accumulating 345 points. His experience includes winning the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022.

Johnson was chosen first overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. He is one of only 23 players selected first to play 1,000 games, and he is the sixth defenseman to reach this mark. He expressed gratitude for the support from his parents, coaches, and teammates, noting that reaching 1,000 games is a tough milestone.

In his early career, Johnson faced a major setback when he tore ligaments in his knee during a golf accident. This injury kept him out for the whole 2008-09 season. “It was hard because I had a ton of expectations,” he reflected. This experience taught him the importance of hard work and the need to take care of his body.

After missing that season, he played 79 games in 2009-10 and was later traded to the Avalanche. During his 13 seasons with them, he played 717 games and scored 246 points. However, injuries continued to challenge him, including a serious knee injury in 2015 and a broken fibula in 2017.

Most recently, Johnson suffered a season-ending concussion in early 2021. This injury made him consider retirement but did not stop him from reaching his current milestone. His journey emphasizes resilience, determination, and the love of the game.
