The upcoming revival of the hit comedy series Malcolm in the Middle
will proceed without original cast member Erik Per Sullivan. Sullivan, who portrayed the youngest brother Dewey throughout the original run from 2000 to 2006, has declined an offer to return for the Disney+ reboot, prioritizing his academic pursuits over a return to acting.
According to former co-star Jane Kaczmarek, who played the family matriarch Lois, the production offered Sullivan significant financial incentives to rejoin the ensemble. Kaczmarek described the offer as buckets of money
, but stated that Sullivan responded with No thank you.
Academic Focus at Harvard
Now 34 years old, Sullivan has transitioned away from the entertainment industry to focus on higher education. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Victorian literature at Harvard University.
Kaczmarek highlighted Sullivan’s dedication to his studies in an interview with The Guardian, noting that he is studying Dickens and is an incredible student.
This decision aligns with a long-term preference for privacy. Frankie Muniz, who played the titular character Malcolm, told The Post in November 2025 that Sullivan is very happy in the life that he’s created outside of the entertainment world.
Muniz added that the cast and production respected Sullivan’s choice not to return, noting that he had given his blessing from the start for the role to be recast.
Details of the Revival: Life’s Still Unfair
The revival, titled Life’s Still Unfair
, is a four-episode series that will premiere on April 10, 2026. In the United States, it will be available on Hulu and for bundle subscribers on Hulu on Disney+, while it will stream on Disney+ internationally.

The plot centers on an adult Malcolm who is now raising a daughter. The narrative follows Malcolm as he is drawn back into his family’s orbit when his parents, Hal and Lois, demand his presence at their 40th anniversary party.
While Sullivan is the only original ensemble member to be recast, the revival reunites several key figures from the original Fox series:
- Frankie Muniz returns as Malcolm.
- Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek return as Hal and Lois.
- Justin Berfield and Chris Masterson return as Reese and Francis.
- Emy Coligado appears as Francis’ wife, Piama.
The production also introduces new characters to reflect the passage of time. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark has been cast to play the role of Dewey. The series introduces Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae as the youngest siblings, Jamie and Kelly, who were either toddlers or absent during the original series. The cast also includes Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s girlfriend, Tristan, and Keeley Karsten as Malcolm’s daughter, Leah.
Sullivan’s Departure from the Spotlight
Sullivan’s commitment to staying out of the public eye has been consistent for nearly two decades. Reports indicate he was photographed in public for the first time in 18 years as recently as April 2025.
By choosing to remain in academia rather than accept the high-paying offer for the Disney+ reboot, Sullivan continues a trajectory of complete separation from the industry that defined his early childhood.
