Erik Per Sullivan, the actor who portrayed Dewey in the original Malcolm in the Middle, has declined an offer to return for the series’ upcoming revival. Despite significant financial incentives, Sullivan has chosen to remain retired from acting to focus on his academic pursuits.

The news was shared by co-star Jane Kaczmarek, who played Lois in the original series. In an interview with The Guardian, Kaczmarek revealed that the production team offered Sullivan buckets of money to reprise his role, but the actor responded with No thank you.

Sullivan is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Victorian literature at Harvard University. Kaczmarek described him as an incredible student who is currently studying Dickens.

Recasting and New Cast Members

Because of Sullivan’s decision, he is the only member of the original primary ensemble to be recast for the revival. The role of Dewey will now be played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.

Recasting and New Cast Members

Frankie Muniz told The Post in November 2025 that the cast and crew respect Sullivan’s choice to stay outside of the entertainment world. Muniz noted that Sullivan gave his blessing from the beginning for the production to recast the role.

The revival, officially titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, will feature several returning cast members from the original Fox comedy:

  • Frankie Muniz as Malcolm
  • Bryan Cranston as Hal
  • Jane Kaczmarek as Lois
  • Christopher Kennedy Masterson as Francis
  • Justin Berfield as Reese

The production also introduces new and grown-up characters. Emy Coligado joins the cast as Piama, the wife of Francis. Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae will portray the youngest siblings, Jamie and Kelly, who were either toddlers or absent during the original series run.

the story will introduce Malcolm’s personal life as an adult, with Keeley Karsten playing his daughter, Leah, and Kiana Madeira playing his girlfriend, Tristan.

Plot and Release Details

The four-episode revival centers on a grown-up Malcolm who is pulled back into his family’s orbit. The plot is driven by Hal and Lois demanding his presence at their 40th anniversary party.

The series is scheduled to premiere on April 10, 2026. It will be available on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the United States, and on Disney+ for international audiences.

Sullivan, who starred in the original series from 2000 to 2006, has maintained a very low public profile since the show ended. He was photographed in public for the first time in 18 years in April 2025.
