‘Jessica Jones’ Actress Erin Moriarty Shares Graves’ Disease Diagnosis
Erin Moriarty, best known for her role in “Jessica Jones,” recently disclosed her diagnosis of Graves’ disease in a candid social media post. The actress detailed her journey, emphasizing the importance of early detection and seeking medical help.
“Autoimmune disease manifests differently in everybody/every body,” Moriarty wrote, highlighting the unique experiences individuals face. She stressed that her experience might differ significantly from others.
Moriarty revealed that she initially attributed her symptoms to stress and fatigue. ”One thing I can say: if I hadn’t chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would’ve caught this sooner,” she noted. She was diagnosed with Graves’ disease a month prior to her post and has since begun treatment.
Sharing a positive update, Moriarty said, “Within 24 hours of beginning treatment, I felt the light coming back on. It’s been increasing in strength ever since. If yours is dimming, even slightly, go get checked.”
Moriarty also offered words of encouragement: “Don’t ‘suck it up’ and transcend suffering; you deserve to be comfy. S–t’s hard enough as is.”
The actress included a series of selfies in her post, showing a range of emotions, alongside screenshots of text conversations with her parents, illustrating her struggles.
One message to her mother read, “I’m serious; I really, really need relief. I feel nauseated tonight. I feel so s–t and removed from who I am. I can’t live like this forever. Or that long.” Another text to her father expressed relief after starting treatment: “I already feel a world of difference, primary thought (as of now): ‘damn, this is how I’m supposed to feel? I’ve been missing out!’ xx.”
Moriarty’s reveal comes nearly a year after Daisy Ridley also shared her Graves’ disease diagnosis. Ridley told Women’s Health that she experienced symptoms such as a racing heart rate, weight loss, fatigue, and hand tremors after filming the movie “Magpie.”
Ridley recalled her doctor explaining that those with Graves’ disease often feel “tired but wired,” which resonated with her. “It was funny, I was like, ‘Oh, I just thought I was annoyed at the world,’ but turns out everything is functioning so quickly, you can’t chill out,” Ridley said.
