Erin Patterson Discusses Estrangement, Self-Esteem at Trial
Erin Patterson, accused of triple murder, addressed the court Monday, discussing her struggles with low self-esteem and a growing distance from her estranged husband’s family. The 50-year-old is on trial in Victoria’s Supreme Court, facing charges related to a fatal lunch in July 2023.
Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66, died after consuming a meal at Patterson’s Leongatha home. The cause of death was determined to be death cap mushroom poisoning. Patterson also faces an attempted murder charge for Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, who survived after falling ill.
Dressed in a paisley top and black pants,Patterson affirmed her testimony before the jury. Defense barrister Colin Mandy questioned her about her family life leading up to the lunch.
Patterson stated that her two children lived with her and had unrestricted access to their father, Simon. She described her financial situation as “comfortable,” allowing her to attend university without needing to work.
Patterson told the court that her relationship with Simon’s family, particularly Don and Gail, had become strained in the months before the incident. “We saw each other less,” she said, adding that she felt excluded from family events.

Patterson also revealed that she had battled “low self-esteem” for much of her adult life and had considered gastric bypass surgery. She described herself as a former “essential atheist” who later embraced Christianity after witnessing Ian Wilkinson, Simon’s uncle, deliver a sermon.
Recounting the birth of her first child, Patterson became emotional, describing it as a “very traumatic” experience. She said she discharged herself from the hospital against medical advice to be with her son.
She cited interaction issues as the primary source of her relationship problems with Simon.
