The Seattle Seahawks are banking on continuity to elevate their defense in 2025. With the offense undergoing significant changes, the defense, which ranked ninth in points allowed last season, retains its core personnel, coaching staff, and scheme under defensive coordinator Aden Durde and coach Mike Macdonald.
Defensive tackle Jarran Reed highlighted the benefit of familiarity. “It’s like reading the same book over and over again,” Reed said, noting the defense can now play faster and more instinctively.
Key re-signings include Reed and linebacker Ernest Jones IV, solidifying the defensive line and linebacker corps. Cornerback Josh Jobe and nose tackle Johnathan hankins also returned. Of the 16 defenders who played at least 300 snaps last season, 13 are back.
Durde emphasized that the returning personnel allows for quicker adjustments and anticipation on the field. “The continuity comes with the understanding of OK, now when we’re going through it, the formation adjustments, thay’re talking [through] them,” Durde said.
Last season, the Seahawks’ defense improved considerably against the run, dropping from 28th in rushing yards allowed per game over the first seven weeks (146.1) to seventh over the final nine weeks (96.2).
jones, who re-signed for three years and $28.5 million, provides stability after multiple trades last year. “That’s my linebacker,” Reed said, praising Jones’s intelligence and physicality.
Recovering from knee surgery, Jones participated in team activities.”I’m feeling really good,” Jones said, expressing excitement for the upcoming season.
Looking ahead, the Seahawks have around $30 million in cap space, perhaps positioning them to add a significant defensive piece. While names like Trey Hendrickson and jalen Ramsey have been mentioned, their fit within the team’s culture and financial structure remains a question.
The team’s focus on unity was evident in full attendance at voluntary OTA sessions. Jones believes this continuity could lead to something special for the Seahawks’ defense in 2025.
