Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics have successfully disentangled X-ray emissions originating from within the solar system from those coming from deep space using data from the eROSITA telescope aboard the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory. This breakthrough enables clearer observation of the diffuse X-ray sky and improves understanding of how solar wind interacts with interstellar matter.

The eROSITA telescope, which has been conducting all-sky surveys since December 2019, captures X-ray emissions across the energy range of 0.2 to 8 keV. Its data revealed that the soft X-ray glow previously attributed solely to distant astrophysical sources includes a significant component generated within the heliosphere through a process known as solar wind charge exchange (SWCX). In this process, highly charged ions from the solar wind capture electrons from neutral interstellar gas, emitting X-rays as they de-excite.
