The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) has issued a stark warning about the potential for significant power disruptions across Ireland, affecting thousands of customers, due to an ongoing land dispute.
Urgent Court Action Over Land Interference
The ESB is taking urgent legal action to prevent what it describes as “serious risk” to the national electricity grid. The dispute centres on land at Barne Estate, where alleged interference with crucial electricity infrastructure could have far-reaching consequences.
The Stakes: Thousands Without Power
The core of the ESBS concern lies in the potential disruption to multiple high-voltage electricity lines.
Four critical lines are at the heart of the issue.
The ESB fears that interference with these lines could lead to a “disruption of continuity of supply” for a ample number of customers.
Two of these lines are 110kV lines, vital for supplying power to the greater eastern and midland regions of Ireland. The third is a 38kV line, which alone serves approximately 18,000 customers. The potential for these customers to be left without power, and the severe impact on the national grid, is a major concern for the ESB.
Legal Proceedings Underway
The ESB has initiated court proceedings to address the situation.
On Wednesday, Mr Justice Brian Cregan granted the ESB permission to serve proceedings on Mr O’Shea, a party involved in the land dispute. This permission was granted following an application made by Stephen Dodd SC, representing the ESB.Given the critical nature and urgency of the matter, the case is expected to return to court swiftly, with a hearing perhaps scheduled for Friday. The ESB is clearly determined to resolve this issue to safeguard the nation’s power supply.
