Thirteen celebrity contestants are preparing to take to the floor for the 20th season premiere of the Norwegian dance competition Skal vi danse. Ahead of the launch, traditional training rules regarding alcohol are being upended. While past seasons often saw competitors enforce strict abstinence to maintain stamina, participants reveal that actual habits in the studio vary widely from complete sobriety to increased consumption.
The 20th Season Upends Traditional Training Rules
Comedian Espen PA Lervaag Adopts a Relaxed Approach
Comedian Espen PA Lervaag stated that neither he nor his dance partner, Louise Heise, adopted a strict avholdslinje during the rehearsal period. Instead, Lervaag noted that they consume slightly more alcohol now than before the show began due to demanding schedules with young children at home. Lervaag explained to Nettavisen that he still enjoys a glass of red wine on weekends without noticing any negative impact on his dancing ability.
– We haven’t made a conscious choice to cut out alcohol in connection with training. In fact, we drink almost more now than before. We both have small children at home, so after training it’s mostly straight home, says Lervaag.
Sandra Lyng and Santino Mirenna Balance Social Events
While Lervaag and Heise maintain a relaxed approach, other pairs report different experiences. Artist and entrepreneur Sandra Lyng described her routine as the reverse of her normal habits, noting that she usually drinks only a couple of times a year as a designated driver. Lyng stated that participation in Skal vi danse has introduced social events, such as a birthday celebration for her professional partner Santino Mirenna, though she limits her intake because recovery takes a full week. Mirenna added that he maintains a normal consumption level, enjoying an occasional glass of wine during the season.
Complete Sobriety and Boundaries Before Broadcasts
Meanwhile, influencer and television personality Tim Kristian continues his usual alcohol-free routine, explaining that he avoids alcohol because it causes fatigue. His professional partner, Amalie Aune, confirmed she has not dropped alcohol during the rigorous training schedule.
Lervaag noted that while some participants share updates on social media involving champagne and social gatherings, he and his partner avoid those settings, adding his belief that consuming alcohol immediately before television broadcasts remains strictly off-limits.
