ESPN Africa has secured exclusive English-language broadcasting rights to France’s Top 14 rugby union competition in a multi-year agreement, significantly expanding its rugby portfolio across the continent.
The deal, announced on April 17, 2026, grants ESPN Africa the rights to broadcast all Top 14 matches live and on-demand throughout sub-Saharan Africa, marking a major step in the network’s strategy to deepen its coverage of premier international rugby tournaments.
Top 14, widely regarded as one of the most competitive and physically demanding club rugby leagues in the world, features elite teams such as Toulouse, La Rochelle, Racing 92, and Montpellier. The league attracts global talent and consistently produces players who feature prominently in international test matches for France and other nations.
Under the agreement, ESPN Africa will provide comprehensive coverage including live match broadcasts, pre- and post-match analysis, highlights packages, and original programming focused on the league’s storylines, player profiles, and tactical insights. The network plans to integrate Top 14 content into its existing rugby offerings, which already include coverage of the Six Nations, Rugby Championship, and select international test matches involving African nations.
Industry analysts view the acquisition as a strategic move to capitalize on growing interest in rugby across key African markets, particularly in South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Uganda, where the sport has seen increased participation and viewership at both grassroots and elite levels.
While financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, sources familiar with the negotiations indicated that the multi-year structure reflects long-term confidence in the commercial viability of rugby broadcasting in Africa, supported by improving digital infrastructure and rising demand for premium sports content.
The Top 14 season typically runs from August to June, with a winter break during the international window. ESPN Africa’s coverage will begin with the 2026-2027 season, aligning with the start of the new broadcasting cycle.
This development follows ESPN Africa’s recent efforts to strengthen its position as a leading sports broadcaster in the region, having previously expanded its rights to major football leagues, cricket tournaments, and combat sports events. The addition of Top 14 further diversifies its portfolio and reinforces its commitment to delivering high-quality, internationally recognized sporting events to African audiences.
