ESPN analyst Matt Bowen has released a comprehensive evaluation of the 2026 NFL draft class, utilizing 100 distinct skill superlatives to categorize the top prospects across all positions. The analysis, shared on April 13, 2026, identifies Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza as the projected No. 1 overall pick.
The evaluation framework focuses on specific traits that separate prospects from their peers, ranging from offensive playmaking speed to defensive first-step quickness. In the quarterback category, Bowen analyzed 15 different traits to highlight eight specific players.
Quarterback Performance Metrics
Fernando Mendoza emerged as the primary figure in the analysis, securing five nominations. Mendoza was named the most accurate passer in the class, recording a 7.1% off-target rate during the previous season. He was also designated as the best deep-ball thrower.

On attempts of 20 or more air yards in 2025, Mendoza completed 53.8% of his passes, which ranked as the fourth highest in the nation, resulting in 11 touchdowns.
Other quarterback prospects were recognized for specific physical and technical advantages:
- Penn State’s Drew Allar was identified as having the strongest arm in the class. Allar stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 228 pounds.
- LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier was named the prospect with the quickest throw release.
Nussmeier’s efficiency is supported by an average time to throw of 2.58 seconds, a figure that placed him in the top 25 nationally last season. Over his college career, Nussmeier recorded 7,699 passing yards and 52 touchdowns. In 2024, he completed 337 of 525 passes for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns, maintaining a 64.2% completion rate.
Draft Class Distribution
Beyond the top-tier superlatives, the analysis distributed nods to several other quarterbacks. Ty Simpson of Alabama, Haynes King of Georgia Tech, and Garrett Nussmeier each received two nominations.
Single nominations were awarded to Carson Beck of Miami, Drew Allar of Penn State, Diego Pavia of Vanderbilt, and Taylen Green of Arkansas.
The broader list of 100 categories extends beyond the quarterback position to include the fastest running backs, wide receivers with the best hands, and edge rushers with the quickest first steps, as well as evaluations of field vision and flexibility.
The analysis was conducted by Matt Bowen, an ESPN writer and former NFL safety who played seven seasons for the St. Louis, Green Bay, Washington, and Buffalo franchises.
