National Guard Deployed to Los Angeles Amid ICE Protests
updated June 8, 2025
Following public immigration raids and subsequent demonstrations in Los Angeles, teh National Guard has been deployed. U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, Bill Essayli, defended the decision, citing escalating tensions and the need to protect federal agents.
essayli explained that after three ICE operations became public, protests erupted in downtown Los Angeles, Compton, and Paramount. He noted that the agents’ staging area was discovered, leading to a rapid mobilization of protesters and a volatile situation.
The U.S. attorney clarified that reports of ICE raids at a Home Depot and meat factories in Paramount where inaccurate. Federal agents were simply stationed near a field office close to the retailer.
According to Essayli, the unrest on Friday and Saturday underscored the necessity for additional support for federal agents. The deployment of more Border Patrol officers over the weekend aimed to manage the growing crowds.
Essayli echoed concerns voiced by ICE Acting Director Todd M. Lyons, stating that violent protesters were endangering the lives of federal agents. He reported that several officers sustained injuries during Saturday’s clashes, including a broken wrist and wounds from thrown rocks and cement blocks.
“It was just a staging area for our federal agents, but they were spotted, and word got out,” Essayli said. “These agitators who are organizing this resistance effort started mobilizing people to that location, and it turned into ugly scene pretty quickly.”
Essayli emphasized the increasing sophistication of protest organization, necessitating greater resource allocation. He stated that the national Guard’s role is to maintain peace and safeguard federal assets.
While the National guard has previously assisted in disaster relief and local law enforcement support, this deployment signals a more assertive federal approach to immigration enforcement.
“This is not going to end. we intend to enforce immigration laws as writen and we’ll continue to do our job and that is just what the direction is and what the American people voted for in November,” Essayli said.
