Essential Guide to Open Enrollment: Navigating Health Insurance Options for 2023

Essential Guide to Open Enrollment: Navigating Health Insurance Options for 2023

November 30, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Open Enrollment for Health Insurance

Open enrollment is the time each year when you can enroll in, renew, or change your health insurance plan for the next year. Here’s what you need to know:

Enrollment Periods:

  • The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace enrollment is open now and will close on January 15.
  • Many employers offer open enrollment from October to December.
  • Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7.

What You Should Do:

  • Visit Healthcare.gov for improved user experience and simplified options. For the first time, DACA recipients can enroll in Marketplace plans.

Understanding Coverage:

  • Each health plan has specific coverage details. It’s important to understand what is included in your plan, such as:
    • In-network and out-of-network services
    • Deductibles and copays

Be aware that some Marketplace plans may not cover primary, preventive, and hospital care from Lee Health. This could lead to higher costs for you.

Emergency Care:

  • In emergencies, Lee Health’s emergency departments will treat everyone, regardless of insurance. However, costs may still apply if your plan does not include Lee Health.

Why Review Your Plan:

  • If you have Marketplace coverage and do not make changes, you will be re-enrolled in the same plan. Check your plan’s coverages and preferred providers. This helps you avoid unexpected bills.
  • Commercial plans may also differ in coverage for services at Lee Health.

Medicare Changes to Note:

  • The Cigna Medicare Advantage Plan will end its individual PPO option in Florida in 2025.
  • Florida Blue Medicare Advantage will not cover Lee Physician Group primary care providers as preferred in 2025, which may lead to extra costs.

Confirming Your Coverage:

  • Contact your insurance provider and Lee Health’s billing department to ensure Lee Health is a network or preferred provider under your plan.

Understanding your health insurance plan is crucial. Make informed choices during open enrollment to ensure you get the care you need at a cost you can manage.
