Ethan Hawke is set to reprise his role as the chilling serial killer, the Grabber,in “Black Phone 2,” the sequel to the 2022 indie horror success. The original “Black Phone” grossed $161 million worldwide against a modest $18 million budget, solidifying its place as a buzzy horror franchise.
Scott Derrickson returns to direct and co-wriet “Black Phone 2” alongside C. Robert Cargill. The first film, based on a short story by Joe Hill, followed Mason Thames as a kidnapped boy who escapes with the help of a haunted phone. Thames, along with original cast members Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora, will also return for the sequel.
Jason Blum is producing the film for Blumhouse, with Derrickson and Cargill also producing. Hill and Ryan Turek serve as executive producers. Universal and Blumhouse present the Crooked Highway Production.
The release date for “Black Phone 2” is Oct. 17, after an initial plan to release the film in June.
Derrickson hinted at a fresh take on the ghost story premise. He said the sequel introduces a villainous ghost, a departure from the victimized ghosts of the first film. He added that the shift from a middle school to a high school setting allows for a more intense horror experience.
The first movie was a ghost movie but all the ghosts were victims, which is typical, a ghost story. But in this one, you’ve got a ghost that is a villain.
