Ethiopia Eyes Peaceful Nuclear Transition with IAEA Support, Expanding Cancer care
Ethiopia is actively pursuing a “peaceful nuclear transition,” with plans to potentially introduce nuclear energy within the next decade, according to Technology adn innovation Minister Belete molla. This ambition is being supported by a growing collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as discussed during a meeting between Minister Molla and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi on September 15-19 as part of the agencyS 69th General Conference.
The partnership isn’t solely focused on energy production.A key priority is strengthening cancer services in Addis Ababa. In June, Ethiopia launched a new nuclear medicine service at Black Lion Hospital, and the IAEA-provided linear accelerator (LINAC) is expected to significantly broaden access to vital cancer treatments for Ethiopian citizens.
Minister Molla publicly expressed his gratitude for Director general Grossi’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s progress, noting the IAEA’s readiness to assist with the country’s nuclear ambitions. He specifically requested continued support in crucial areas like human resource training and technical assistance, recognizing these as essential for a accomplished and safe implementation of nuclear technologies.
